Unannounced inspections of tier-2 and tier-3 units

While other supply-chain solutions focus on the main factories and primary production units, GoodWeave’s defining feature is its ability to reach even the micro-scale factories in the informal part of the supply chain, including home-based production. This in-depth intervention offers partnering brands and businesses greater visibility of their supply chains. The inspections are unannounced to make non-compliances related to child labor and forced labor easier to track and resolve. We are currently monitoring more than 5,000 production units across India to help GoodWeave licensees build transparent supply chains.

Remediation via business

GoodWeave is the only organization that rehabilitates children found in looms and provides educational opportunities and other critical services to them. Within the carpet sector, more than 90 percent of the child laborers GoodWeave rehabilitates are in outsourced, cottage industry production. In any such case, remediation occurs through business cooperation at the level of the facility - helping small businessmen including contractors and sub-contractors become more accountable and conscious decision makers. Thousands of rehabilitated and at-risk children have received education and other life-enhancing opportunities, such as bridge school and counselling. Read some of their stories here.

Capacity Building at all levels

The supply chain mapping process itself is crucial for enabling disclosure of complete production. Benchmarking and continuous improvement of individual production units is then undertaken through continuous audit and inspection process. This also means a move towards formalization of small production units increasing their efficiency as well as socially compliance. GoodWeave and its business partners also work together to make these units legally recognised and visible, ensuring their stability. Thus, once the complete supply chain comes under GoodWeave’s inspection process, it becomes easier for licensee exporters to demonstrate their complete production capacity including outsourced units.
